A Brief History
The All American Honor Guard Inc. is a state certified 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to honoring those who have served and are currently serving our country in the American military. First started in 1991 by a group of people looking for a way to thank those who had given so much over the years, the mission of our organization is not to glorify war but to educate the public on the experiences and sacrifices of America’s diverse citizen soldiers in order to win and preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.
As part of our efforts, the AAHG has been hosting an annual living history event for over the past 16 years to display America’s rich military history for the education and enjoyment of the public. We also invite many other history groups to attend and contribute to this effort. We started out on the grounds of the Albemarle County Office Building for our events before moving to a larger area at the Charlottesville Elks Lodge. We draw our membership from a wide area of Central Virginia and we have always sought a location that would allow us to present our living history to other communities outside of the Charlottesville-Albemarle community. We do not charge admission to our events but ask for donations of any kind to help us continue to bring our events to the community.
Our primary efforts have been through the presentation of military living history to the public, schools, scouts, and other groups in which we portray the lives of our soldiers, sailors, and marines. Exhibits of authentic uniforms, equipment, firearms, camps and vehicles of selected periods bring forth the lives of our military from the pages of history to real life. We also participate in a number of parades (Scottsville and Crozet 4th of July), Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies (Charlottesville), educational displays (Stone-Robinson School, Expoland Boy Scout Jamboree), and reenactments (Fort William Henry and Jamestown).
The All American Honor Guard and its members have also undertaken many other different efforts over the years in order to to promote our mission. These have included raising money to support scholarships to deserving history students, conducting grade school presentations, and making visits to the VA and the other area veteran rehabilitation facilities.
